Meditation 17 is a poem by John Donne that reveals his thoughts and beliefs on the world altogether. We see a lot of religion cited in this poem and then we also see a kind of dark side of that which would be death. In this poem, John Donne elevates this poem by the way he structures it as well as the language and situation. The language is so important to understand because it can convey a message that is deeper than just the words. We see a lot of words that very common in this poem however, they are placed in a unique way that most likely someone will have to go back and reread to grasp what is being said. There are many metaphors, analogies and personification used throughout the poem. I believe John Donne does this so that the†¦show more content†¦I see John Donne doing the same thing in this poem, the tone is somewhat straight forward and serious, with the narrator having a down speaking tone and somewhat apathetic to the things being conveyed in this poem. â€Å"And when she buries a man, that action concerns me† this is an indicator of the tone being used once again. It is clear that the line is speaking about death, it is pretty common that death is taking seriously and in which we would be serious when speaking on it. John Donne also uses alliterations throughout this poem along with repetition. â€Å"congregation to come†, â€Å"the church is catholic†, are examples of alliteration he used. â€Å"the action concerns me†, â€Å"for whom this bell tolls† are used as repetition. All of these examples are used to help remind the reader what exactly they are reading and gathering from the poem. I think that these all lighten the mood of the poem so it’s not total darkness. The structure stands out to me mainly in the fact that there are no stanzas nor paragraph indentions. The poem is a single paragraph, I believe he kept it this way because he states that â€Å"all mankind is of one author and is one vo lume†. Also, this single paragraph poem could be seen as an essay. With so much time dedicated to its development, one could expect nothing short of perfection. What is religion? The dictionary states that religion is: â€Å"Possessing beliefs concerning the nature and purpose of the universe and the supernatural† (A student’s Dictionary 268). Different cultures have different definitions for the word religion. However, they all have one characteristic in common, faith. The Jewish, for instance, believe in God and that the Messiah will come in the future to bring them once again to the land of Israel. They continue to wait for Him to come. Over time, the Jews were shunned by many people. Hitler pushed all the blame for his, and his people’s troubles on the Jewish people, which then started the holocaust. The holocaust annihilated millions of people many of which were Jews. Because of all the traumatic events that occurred, he lost faith in the God he once believed in unconditionall y. John Roth, author of In the Beginning, explained that the holocaust could only have happened if there was no God (35). However this is not true. In actuality, Eliezer explains that there is a God, he just does not believe in His power anymore. Elie does not say that he has become an atheist or that God had died as many people believe† (Brown 72). Elie simply does not believe in Him because of all the events that occurred while he was in the concentration camps. The concentration camps were places of suffering. After years in the war the Americans finally won and were able to pass the Declaration of Independence. Benjamin Martin had finally gotten even and killed Tavington because he killed both of his sons. Even though a lot of people died they were free at last from British control and that’s when good things started to happen for the Americans. Benjamin Martin ends up falling in love with his dead wifes sister protects his family. He is truly considered a hero because if it weren’t for him then the Americans would have never taken it upon themselves to fight against the British. The colonies became united and it was just the beginning of a good period of time. The Patriot is a wonderful movie that not only has action and romance, but it has an important meaning. It gives us an outlook on the events that took place long ago that eventually led to our independence and the states uniting. Without it we probably wouldn’t have been the United States like we are now and it might have been longer before we would have been free from the British. I would definitely recommend everyone to watch this movie because you will definitely enjoy it regardless of your age or interests.
